Work starts on lighting the Bristol-Bath Railway Path

Work starts this week on the latest Cycling City project - installing lighting along the Bristol to Bath Railway Path.

By the end of February cyclists will be able to ride under street lights for an extra 2km of the path, stretching from the end of the current lit section (Alcove Road in Fishponds) all the way to the Staple Hill tunnel.

Lighting proposal map for Bristol Bath Railway PathOver the years lots of people have asked Bristol City Council to provide lighting, saying that they do not like using the path in the darkness and, as a consequence, they stop using their bikes. The Cycling City project has given the council an opportunity to address this issue - which will encourage more people to continue cycling all year round.

Installing the lights requires that some trenches are dug for electricity cables, which temporarily affects the use of the path. However, diversions are in place between several points so commuters can continue their journeys from this direction by bike.

There will be up to six diversions during the installation of light columns. To find out which parts will be affected, please download the Cycle path diversions pdf

What a criminal waste of electricity.

I experienced the new lights for the first time last night.
You could read by them. You could almost appreciate the full glory of an illustrated manuscript....

Was it really necessary to use lights of that quality ?

Are there so many lamps because at some point the high pressure sodiums are to be replaced with proximity - sensing LED units ?

I suppose it's one way to get those millions spent...

The one place that could actually do with a couple of really good floodlights - the dangerous bend at Clay Bottom - appears to have been overlooked.

So is it finished? The lights look great and I'll certainly appreciate them come next winter.
Any chance of getting the path swept? The works have left the path covered in a mixture of grit, glass and mud..

Claire_g: Heavy snow during January delayed construction work by some way. Contractors will now be working on Saturdays throughout March to finish these works by the end of the month.

So how far behind schedule is this work? The path is a mess at the moment.
