Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
One of Cycling City's aims is to get communities enthused about using their bikes more often. We're working with many voluntary and community organisations to run courses and we have almost 50 'Bike It' schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire on our books.
Cycling City is providing funding for many organistions to run programmes and activities to get more people cycling. Through the Cycling City Community Fund, community organisations can apply for a grant of up to £10,000. Visit the Quartet website and download the application form to submit your idea. [This fund is currently closed having given out all budgetted funds as grants to 17 projects]
Some of the projects recently funded include youth projects such as Baggator work with socially excluded young people and Cycle Bristol CTC's Get Gorge-ous rides for women. Visit the Cycling City Community Fund page to find out about all the projects we've funded so far.
Our work with schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, in partnership with Sustrans, has been a big success. Many schools in the area are now 'Bike It' schools and we've provided funding to give over 9,000 children Bikeability training since April 2008. Plus we've installed lots of parking areas and run events such as bike-to-school breakfasts and family bike rides.
In Bristol and South Gloucestershire we're also making sure young people can get involved in cycling as a sport through things like Bike Club and our Go Ride coaches.
