Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
Cycling City and Aiming High for Disabled Children have launched their All Abilities Cycling project, which has funded 12 specially-adapted bicycles for organisations, schools and families with disabled children and children with special needs to hire.
The adapted bicycles are based at St Paul’s Adventures Playground, which has recently been refurbished to offer an exciting array of possibilities for children, providing a wide range of inclusive play facilities for disabled children and those with special needs, including an exciting new pirate ship with accessible ramps - providing plenty for all children to experience and explore.
The launch of the project marks the end of phase one of the All Abilities Cycling Project. Phase two is expected later in 2010/11 as plans to build a closed road cycle circuit and clubhouse in south-east Bristol come to fruition.
Councillor Jon Rogers, Cabinet Member for Care and Health, said: "Cycling is healthy, active and a great way to get around. On top of all that, it's absolutely brilliant fun. Why should disabled children miss out on all that? I'm very proud of this initiative. Cycling is for everybody and this initiative goes the extra mile to prove it."
A try out-session is taking place at St Pauls Adventure Playground, St Agnes Park, on Monday 23rd August between 11-3pm. Further sessions take place at various locations throughout the summer, including dates at Bristol Cycle Festival.
