Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
Starting on the new cycle path beside the Cumberland Basin we ride towards Harbourside on the Hotwell Road side of Bristol's Floating Harbour.
If you are riding with young children please be aware that we have to cross one busy road without a signal controlled crossing.
We continue this ride into the centre of Bristol in a separate video after negotiating two flights of steps.
A safe and easy ride for all the family with great views of the harbour.
Adam Ef - thanks for your feedback, we'll make sure this issue is logged as a problem with Bristol City Council's infrastructure team.
This movie was posted by a member of the public. We're extremely grateful to Ride.Bikes for filming this route but yes it's perhaps worth noting that the route isn't best suited to riding with small children.
Unfortunately this route is no good if you're travelling with small children. The section where you have to descend and ascend two flights of steps is impossible. I have two kids and would need to get them both off the bike, carry them and the luggage (changing bags etc) down the steps and leave them by the waters edge while I go up and get my bike and then repeat this going up the two flights of steps a little bit further on. Simply not realistic or safe to leave them sitting on the edge of the docks. The other option at that point is to join the busy Hotwells road for that bit of the journey, but sadly that renders the rest of the route a bit pointless when you have a fast and unpleasant section in the middle. If you're looking for a quiet route to get across town with kids as I was then this isn't for you. A great shame that an otherwise marvellous route is let down by that flaw.
Also the ridiculous barrier at 1min44sec in this video is a no go if your bike is slightly longer than normal.. ie Cargo Bikes or Xtracycles.
