Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
Good cycle parking tells the world that you're an environmentally-friendly organisation and it's a proven way of deterring cycle theft.
‘Take a Stand’ is a scheme which encourages different organisations to install cycle parking. It is run by Life Cycle UK in partnership with local councils, including Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and BANES.
What is it? A scheme whereby organisations can obtain cycle parking stands free of charge
Who is it for? Voluntary sector groups, schools, small businesses, churches and surgeries, in fact almost any type of organisation is welcome to apply.
What do I get? Up to two or four cycle stands, depending on which local authority area you live in.
How much does it cost? Life Cycle deliver the stands for free. You have to install them, so the cost is the cost of installation.
What is the snag? The conditions are the stands must not be installed as part of a planning application and it needs to installed on your own property
How do I apply? Get a form from Life Cycle UK’s website www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/cycle-parking
Why are you doing it? Both Life Cycle UK and Greater Bristol as a Cycling City want to see cycling become a central part of Bristol’s travel culture. Secure cycle parking is a clear part of this.
How long will it take to get the stands? We deliver once every few weeks, so it depends on demand. If delivery is urgent, you can usually collect by arrangement.

Murrays of Clevedon
Paul Threasher, chef, says: “The bike stands allow us to cycle to work in the knowledge that when unattended, our bikes are secure .Although most of the staff live within a 4 mile radius of Murrays it is not unusual to find 9 or 10 bikes tethered in the courtyard. 9 or 10 cars off the road! Thank you Life Cycle.”
