Saddle up for Bike to School week

Monday 13th September sees the launch of Bristol and South Gloucestershire's very first Bike to School Week, encouraging thousands of children to get to school using two wheels.

Over the five days of Bike to School week children and parents will be learning how to navigate their way to school by bike with the help of Aardman Animation’s Shaun the Sheep and friends.

The Cycling City team has worked with Aardman to designed Shaun the Sheep literature and promotional materials will help children learn how to find quiet, cycle-friendly routes to school that avoid busy main roads that children usually see from a car window.

As well as filling in their Shaun the Sheep travel diaries, children will also be taking part in Bikeability training sessions, bike decorating workshops, bike maintenance sessions and bike breakfasts to build an attachment to their bicycle that will hopefully last a lifetime.

Children biking to school during the week will be able to use the many hundreds of miles of cycle paths in the city, as well as over 20 new cycle paths installed as part of the region's Cycling City project, including the South Bristol 20mph zone and Westbury on Trym safer routes to schools project.

Cycling City officers have developed local travel maps for each school in Bristol, available through each school or by emailing jodi.savickas@bristol.gov.uk

Bike to School week runs from Monday 13th September until Friday 17th September. All children taking part in bike decorating workshops can also take part in Bristol Cycle Festival's carnival on Sunday 19th September.
