New Cycling City path at Cumberland Basin Road

Work is set to start on phase 1 of a new Cycling City pedestrian and cycle path at the junction between Merchants Road and Cumberland Basin Road in Hotwells.

This phase forms part of a larger development that will eventually run underneath the Plimsoll Bridge and along to the end of the Portway.

The aim of the scheme is to improve journeys on bike and on foot to and from the Portway, connecting the existing cycling facility along the Portway with the harbourside at the Pump House. It will also improve pedestrian access to the foot bridge that runs across Cumberland Basin Road, Bennett Way, Cabot Way and Hotwells Road, taking walkers onto Granby Hill in lower Clifton.

Regular users of this bridge include pedestrians walkers heading to Cliftonwood and children and parents heading to Hotwells Primary Schools.

Currently there is a marked, on-road cycle lane to travel out of town from Merchants Road towards the Portway but there isn't an obvious or direct route for inbound cyclists from the Portway. The route will narrow down the wide carriageway and improve the crossing of Merchants Road. Narrowing down the carriageway will also make crossing the road into the open space under the gyratory easier for pedestrians and cycles.

Work will start on Phase 2 of the path, between the Plimsoll Bridge and the Portway, in June 2010 once the works to Cumberland Basin entrance locks are completed.

The pdf below shows a map of phase 1 and phase 2 of the development.
