Hello!

Last month started with a flurry of on-the-ground cycling activity - new routes opening and construction work starting in lots of places. BBC Radio 4 recorded a feature for their up-coming Cycling City programme, MBUK magazine came to see what's happening at Ashton Court and Norman Baker MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport even came down from Whitehall to see the Cycling City project in action.

These are great opportunities to talk about our work to a wider audience. We rely on coverage like this, and on people like you, our advocates, to spread the word for us, telling your friends and families about the new cycle routes. So please do share these details with your bike riding friends, colleagues and BUGs, and encourage them to register for our updates.

Below we've neatly wrapped up the biggest news stories so you can help us spread the word.

Cycle route between Bradley Stoke and Parkway station officially opened

Made a new year's resolution to get fitter in 2011? Let us give you a hand. A new two mile cycle route between Bradley Stoke leisure centre and Bristol Parkway gives you a healthier alternative for getting to the gym or the train station.

Funding secured for mountain biking improvements

Cycling City have teamed up with the Forestry Commission, National Trust and the 1 South West project to secure £400,000 for 11km of new or reconstructed cycle trails and a new cycle and golf hub at Ashton Court and Leigh Woods. Work starts soon and is set to be complete by July.

Work starts on three places along Frome Greenway

Diggers, dump trucks, hard hats and high vis jackets are out in force in east Bristol as work starts on three Cycling City projects. Work at Wickham Glen, Stapleton Road and Lower Castle Street will join Frome Greenway to the city centre and Stoke Park.

Safe place for city centre cycle parking

A new CCTV-monitored car park includes 66 cycle parking bays, giving you another safe city centre place to lock your bicycle. Remember though, CCTV does very little if you aren't locking your bike securely

Two months left for heavily discounted urban cycling skills sessions

Do you know someone who's a bit wary of cycling? Someone who doesn't know the best way to ride in traffic? Then sign them up for a city cycling course - only a fiver in Bristol until March 31st (or completely free if you live or work in South Glos!). Watch our recently produced movie if you want to see what's involved in a training session.

New cycle routes filmed

Our intrepid camera person has been out again, filming cycle routes in the area. Bradley Stoke leisure centre to Parkway (South Glos route 3) and Parkway to UWE's Frenchay campus (route 9) are both ready to watch.

We've also seen some raw footage of the widened paths along St Phillips Causeway waiting to be edited. (Ed: Coming next month I hear.)

Let us know if there's a route you'd like us to film - or record it yourself and upload it to the video gallery.

On the blog

  • Brook Bridge landed on Saturday 29th January and we captured it on camera. Take a look at the pics and watch the video if you want to see how a 44m long, 50 tonne bridge gets installed. It'll be open to the public later in February, once the tarmac approach paths are complete.

  • Red Bull Hill Chasers drew thousands to Park Street to witness up-hill cycle racing - the winner took a reported 20-seconds! Read our report and watch the final race if you want to relive the action.

  • Ten year old Kieron wrote in to tell us about his new year's 'revolutions'. Keep an eye out for him in Filton in his new Better By Bike jersey!

In other news

  • Find out the parks and pavements where you can legimately cycle with Bristol City Council's new 'shared space' map.

  • Fancy a trip to the sea side? This weekend the Highways Agency will be installing a new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians between Lawrence Weston and Avonmouth - perfect for accessing the Severn coastline by bike.

  • Cycle jersey winners last month were Grant Bailey and Joanna Papageorgiou and Christopher Reynolds picked up the free swimming voucher at South Glos leisure centres. Keep an eye out for an exciting competition in February!

That's the best of last month but keep an eye on the news pages in February for more new routes opening in time for spring.

Until next month...

Happy cycling!
