Cyclists: public enemy #1?

This week's Venue magazine carries a somewhat controversial headline and has a feature about Cycling City and cycling in the city.

Seen it yet? We won't spoil it for you but do buy a copy, read the article and tell us what you think about the following...

  • Should Venue be running a controversial headline and fueling the apparent division between cyclists and non-cyclists?
  • Should the rider be lycra-clad and wearing a helmet or do most bike riders in Bristol wear everyday clothing?
  • Is this a fair reflection of the Cycling City project? Has Venue missed anything out or got anything wrong?
  • Is it simply just good to see more coverage being given to cycling in local press?

Ah Ha ! controversy! Cyclists: public enemy #1?
What am I to think an anti-cycling agenda from yet another media empire?
Hmmm shall I buy this issue to find out what they're saying ?
It's a cunning plan to get me to buy this issue of Venue !
Ah! Northcliffe Media also have extensive interests in Hungary, Budapest is home to the largest critical mass ride in the world with an estimated 50,000 participants!!! Buy it and let's see what it says.

I bought this months issue, Eugene Byrne article is pretty much spot on and an honest reflection of the current environment.
Say what bit of a laff.

Bike event listings are fun not all entirely accurate. Project Bicyclette dates are for 2009 I believe unless they doing it again on exactly the same dates!!

Also puzzled by the Bristol Cycling Campaign Cycling Festival, last 2 weeks in September.

I think this may not be accurate, Neighbourhood Arts are definitely planning a carnival parade with the support of Cycling City and a Cycling City Festival has been proposed for the last 2 weeks of September with the support of Cycling City. Some events that may form part of this festival are already confirmed for September.

The Festival planned for September is intended to be open to everyone involved in Cycling in Bristol and as inclusive as possible.

Thanks spokenchain - very illuminating! As far as that piece goes it bore very little relation to what was a good feature about the cycle city and cycling in general. good to see coverage for all the other projects going on - Life Cycle, Bristol Cycle Campaign, etc.

Venue was sold to Bristol United Press (BUP) in 2000, the company which runs the Bristol Evening Post and Western Daily Press newspapers.

BUP in turn is owned by the Northcliffe Newspaper Group, part of the Daily Mail & General Trust group.
