Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
This week (Monday 25 January) sees the start on site of two more Cycling City projects in Bristol on Muller Road and alongside Fishponds Road.
The first of these brings a toucan crossing and a 'build out' to Muller Road, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to safely cross the road after leaving St Werburghs cycle path. This crossing will lead to Petherbridge Way and eventually to Dover Court Road following further work in summer 2010.
The Muller Road crossing is part of Cycling City's Northern Route phase 2 which will eventually allow cyclists to join up with cycle paths in South Gloucestershire leading to Filton Abbey Wood and Parkway Station.
The development brings a real alternative for commuters travelling between the north and centre of the city. The St Werburghs section of the path, built in 2009, is already seeing an extra 2000 journeys a month, so these plans are likely to increase cycling commuter numbers even further.
A technical drawing of the Muller Road development can be found below.
The second development sees the start of work on number of improvements to Eastville Park, just off Fishponds Road.
Over the next few weeks the footpath through the park (Public Right of Way 235) will be resurfaced and later this year the footbridge will be replaced and a ramp will be built to improve access to Broom Hill.
These improvements will improve the experience for all park users, as well as upgrading section of the Frome Valley Greenway, which provides a mainly off-road alternative from the University of West England's Frenchay campus into the city centre.
Plans for Eastville Park can also be found below.
The link between Petherbridge Way and Dover Court Road is planned for 2010.
Lookin forward to that Northern Route being done. When's the next bit coming to link up with Dover Court?
