Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
From Monday, 22 March cyclists travelling at night on St Werburghs cycle path (the first of Cycling City's dedicated traffic-free cycling routes) will have the luxury of 80 solar powered 'cat's eyes' lighting their way.
The cat's eyes lights will store solar powered energy during the daytime, and provide light for people travelling along the path at night time. These cost effective lights are being installed every five metres along an 800m stretch of the bike path. The lower part of the path towards Muller Road already has a short lit section. This work extends the lighting back to the City Farm at St Werburghs, making the path safer to travel at night time.
This work will help people travelling to and from the city centre via St Pauls and St Werburghs. The 1km path will eventually cross Muller Road taking cyclists along Dovercourt Road and onto Bristol Parkway train station. Work has already started on building the crossing facility at Muller Road and the preparation work for Over Dover Bridge
This short video clip of the lower part of the path shows how the lights will look.
Wow. Awesome.
I'm going to go and see these.
