Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
Henry Rolls, 32, of Chesterfield Road, is due to start the 1,700-mile journey next month on a 77 Dawes Galaxy bicycle, which he bought on internet site eBay for the princely sum of £77.
He has set himself the challenge, where he will plan all the routes and ride alone, to raise funds for charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
He said: "I heard about the work that MSF was doing in the Congo and it really puts your own troubles in perspective.
"I thought about doing voluntary work and thought raising money would be the best thing to do. I wanted something challenging and arduous but that would be an adventure. Cycling to Morocco in winter seemed to tick all the boxes. "
If he sticks to his goal of cycling 56 miles a day with rest days it will take him about five weeks to reach Morocco.
So far his challenge has helped him to raise more than £1,000. People can sponsor him at www.justgiving.com/henryrolls.
