Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
Transport For London produced an interesting study in Aug 09 on "Cycle Journey Time Reliability". There are two interesting points of this study.
Firstly (and not surprisingly), "journey times are very consistent per rider, and far more independent of traffic conditions than larger vehicles such as cars."
That is, bikes are great for getting you to work on time.
Secondly is that this study was done making use of GPS transponders carried by cyclists to accurately record each trip. The 'traditional' method is to have people out counting cyclist which provides a larger sample, but less accurate details. There are a number of studies of how increasing use of GPS enabled phones might be used to gather useful information.
To find good cycle friendly routes to work you can use the trip planner, and every cyclist should have a set of free cycle maps.
If your employer isn't already promoting cycling then they need to catch up. You could start here.
Bristol's better by bike. Get out and motivate a mate.
