This summer Bike Club has opened up new possibilites for the kids that go along to Windmill Hill Adventure Playground. Every other Wednesday since March, young people have been able to get involved with bike maintenance, learning how to make new bikes from old ones and keep the bicycles in good order.
With help from some funding from Cycling City, the playground has a regular mechanic from local cycling charity Life Cycle UK come along to the playground to encourage the young people to have a go for themselves, as well as lending a hand when things get a bit tricky. They also have a stock of tools and bikes and locks, so they can run their own cycling activities in the future, once the staff have gained some confidence after working closely with the mechanic.
Staff from the adventure playground are really enthusiastic about the project, with one volunteer going onto complete Bikeability instructor training so he can lead rides for the young people on a Saturday.
Sarah, the senior play worker at the playground, is glad of how the young people are learning new skills, especially since it has given her a bike that runs like clockwork thanks to their tinkering!
Windmill Hill City Farm provides services to the community in Bedminster, South Bristol. The adventure playground is an open access site for young people aged 8 to 14, designed to encourage active play and sports to improve the physical wellbeing of children. If you live nearby, feel free to drop in and take part in the bike maintenance every other week.
