Böikzmöind and the fixed gear scene

Last week we gave a talk about Cycling City at A Beautiful Machine, an event organised by Howies and McFaul Studios.

We were lucky enough to be joined on stage by some passionate and talented people including James from Bristol Bike Project, Tony and Dave from Road.CC and a young designer by the name of Gav Strange.

All speakers gave fantastic talks about their own projects but none were more creative or amusing than Gav Strange.

By day Gav works at Aardman Animations but by night he goes under the alias of Jam Factory and produces some wonderfully creative video clips about the fixed wheel cycling scene in Bristol.

Currently Gav is hard at work producing Böikzmöind - a full length film about fixed wheel cycling in Bristol. For now though you can catch a glimpse of the film through this beautifully shot trailer.

Before you click play we must strongly advise that much of this content does not constitute safe cycling behaviour. It's not big, it's not clever and it does nothing to endear cyclists to other road users - enjoy!

haha the old Fixies.

I know people who have got them and love them. I'm not into them myself. Seems like an evolutionary step back to me, and something that's just a trend, which always p*sses me off. Pointless fashion. My Dad said everyone got fixies back in the 60's. For a while, then they realised they were sh*te and went back to having gears. ;)
When I asked my mate to describe why he'd rather a fixie than a geared bike, he couldn't really say, but I sensed that posing was one of the reasons. Fair enough, if that's what gets you through the day

But coming back to the video, looks good, pretty exciting stuff, and I look forward to seeing the whole thing. I also liked the way you see them all start to go up park street. I wonder how many of them had to get off and walk. haha

It seems though from the video is that you can do tricks on them. look cool on them.
and fall off them.

f*ck that

Never saw the attraction of these myself, but I'm looking at them in a new light. Great seeing Bristol backgrounds, and really beautifully shot.

I wonder if they'll be an equivalent for the Bristol trails bikes, in the Danny Macaskill style? There's a good number of very skillful riders around town. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z19zFlPah-o

Love that shot of the Suspension Bridge. Gotta get me a fixie!
