Hello!

Welcome to August folks. We're almost in the middle of the school summer holidays, which means our commute to work is clearer than usual. If you're a parent, why not consider taking your child to school through a cheaper and healthier mode of transport this September? Our page on cargo bikes might give you some inspiration.

£5m investment for Key Commuter Routes

During July the four West of England (WoE) authorities received a £5m investment from the Government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund. B&NES, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are currently setting out plans for the 'Key Commuter Routes' project between local towns and cities.

The WoE region also submitted a bid for a larger project, which was recently given the green light to go through to the next stage. Find out more on the Travel+ website.

Can you Name That Trail?

We want you to name sections of the recently opened mountain bike trail at Ashton Court. The winning entries will get to ride with local mountain bike champ and Olympic hopeful Oli Beckingsale. Enter the competition here.

First events planned for Bristol Cycle Festival

Bristol Cycle Festival returns for its second year this September, bringing with it lots of weird and wacky events, plus Carnivelo - a mass-participation bike ride through Bristol's streets.

Mark the dates of Saturday 17th September to Sunday 25th September in your diaries and keep an eye on Bristol Cycle Festival's event calendar for lots more information.

Bike Film Festival returns to the Watershed

This year’s film festival runs between Thursday 18 – Sunday 21 August, 2011 featuring inspiring talks, classic films and lung-bursting cycle races. Buy your tickets now!

Other events during August

• The Action 100 - Bristol/Bath to London charity ride takes place on Sunday, 28th August.
• Mountain biking lessons for children are being run this summer by Sole Cycling club.
• Life Cycle are continuing with their Silver Cyclists project, getting over 50s back in the saddle with buddy rides.
• Plus plenty more weekly events from Cycle Bristol CTC, GOC Cycle Out Bristol and Bristol Road Club are listed in our Events Calendar.

In other news...

• Life Cycle won the tender to run Bristol City Council's Adult Cycle Training courses. ACT now and book your £10 lesson to learn safer cycling tips - or encourage someone you know to sign up.
• Bristol Bike Project are now one of the latest shops in Bristol to offer a full repair service. If you need a service, take your pick from over 50 local bike shops and several more mobile mechanics.
• We discovered a 20-year old map of Ashton Court's woods, useful for working out the best mountain biking areas.
• Christ Church Primary picked up the south-west's first Sustrans' Silver School Mark Award for its dedication in transforming journeys to school.
• The Cycling City project team published a summary of the improvement and encouragement work carried out between 2008 and 2011. Download the July 2011 project update PDF from our Cycling City pages to take a read.
