Article on bike recycling - how many schemes in Bristol?

Today we spotted an interesting article on the Guardian Bike Blog about the UK's recycling bikes schemes, which also features a handy interactive map.

It was good to see the Bristol Bike Project listed, but what about all the other schemes in the area?

We do wish these newspapers would do their research!

In Bristol there's a stack of bike recycling groups, other than the excellent Bristol Bike Workshop.

The city has the Bike Back scheme, which is a partnership between two local charities and Bristol Prison

Plus there's also:

  • Emmaus - charity organisation employing homeless people to refurbish bikes. All profits go towards providing work and accommodation for homeless people.
  • Jake's Bikes - buy bikes and sell refurbished and bespoke bikes
  • Lifecycle UK - renovate and sell refurbished bikes
  • Jole Rider - send refurbished bikes to developing countries
  • Spoke and Chain - take broken bicycles and turn them into fun bikes, carnival bikes and floats, fairground rides, trailers and all manner of other inventions.
  • The Spokesman - St Werburgh's bike shop specialising in selling refurbished bikes.
  • Cycles4Communities - providing refurbished bikes in Weston-Super-Mare.
  • The Community Bike Workshop in Kingswood takes old bikes of all styles, sizes and conditions. Most of the work is done by young people under the supervision of a qualified bike mechanic.
  • AD Cycle Repairs - mobile mechanic and provider of refurbished bikes.

Incase you need it in future we've listed all these at www.betterbybike.info/recycled-bikes.
