Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
One of the leading figures behind the Summer's Heaven of the South Mountain Bike event has started his own cycling business in Wotton under Edge.
Alastair King has opened Al's Cyclery in premises in the village of Kingswood just south of Wotton. Catering for all things bicycle related, Al's Cyclery has been set up as a box to bench bicycle specialist.
The Heaven of the South was set up by members of Edge MTB; a local mountain bike group who wanted to arrange a friendly biking event to showcase the great routes in the area and to raise money for local charities. It succeeded on both fronts.
The route took in some great scenery and some challenging terrain as 190 cyclists took to the hills. By the end of the weekend over £4000 had been raised for the good causes.
As a result of the popularity and success of the Heaven with local cyclists, Al identified that there was a demand for servicing bikes in the area and that these enthusiasts would benefit from a specialist who would look after them as they pursue their sport. A premises was found and Al's Cyclery was born.
Alastair has plans to develop the business to provide cycle hire, route planning and a new cycle range to compliment the servicing, spares and sales that he offers at the launch of the business.
Al commented “Mountain Biking is a very popular activity in our area. We have some fantastic routes and great scenery interspersed with excellent pubs, all of which combine to provide the perfect area for bike riding. Al's Cyclery provides a local expert service for cycling enthusiasts and I am hope we can offer customers a unique experience as we tap into the rise in popularity of cycling as both a sport and a leisure activity.”
Al's Cyclery will launch a website www.alscyclery.co.uk on 5th December with the premises open from 1st December.
